Day 8: Gammon Ranges and abandoned homesteads

I don't think I could ever get bored of the scenery out here.

Today we decided to break camp and take a little used 4wd track that cut across the Ranges.  The track cris-crossed numerous stony dry river beds which in rare times would see a torrent of water bringing life to this arid landscape.

The track made its way through the Weetootla Gorge and Manyi Range plunging in to valleys then cresting peaks revealing all the glory of the range ahead. The hills exposing their folded rock formations having twisted and buckled then thrust upwards over millions of years.

The track was not that difficult (apart from one hill where Jay decided to stop and have rest half way up - well that's his story!). However I could imagine after the slightest amount of rain would see you enjoying several days camped in the one spot.

We spent most of the day making our way along the track coming across two abandoned homesteads (Yadnina and Yankaninna).  Yankaninna  appeared to only have been deserted in the last 10 years.

We spent the night discussing what may have caused the demise of the farm.  Was it the price of beef just not making the farm viable to operate any more?  Had there been an elderly farmer who's kids no longer wanted to be on the farm and left to the big smoke? Was there no further generations to pass the property on to? Despite the immense size of the property was it still so marginal that it was eventually consumed by an adjoining land owner?  There were many unknown stories hidden in the crumbling walls and delapidated furnature which we will never know.

The sun was slipping below the range so it was time to find another camp. Luckily the spot we found was near an old river bed providing ample firewood providing some welcome warmth against the night chill.
