Day 26: A game of marbles anyone

After a long pack and re-organise we got away from Alice with the target, Banka Banka, over 600 km away.  It seems that the Northern Territory km are longer than elsewhere. The roads are long, straight, flat and not much of anything apart from the non-descript scrub on either side of the road.  This monotony was broken by the termite mounds that were beginning to wear t-shirts, hats and other clothing, obviously dressed by other bored travellers.

This endless landscape makes time slow down and the travel take longer than the brain thinks.  It is no wonder the base speed limit is 130km/h except where you come across a sign with"unlimited speed zone".  Again 'only in the Northern Territory' is it legal to travel as fast as you can without killing yourself.  Unfortunately for us we have an anchor on the back of the 4wd so I could not emulate 'Michael Schumacher' although a few cars that left a vapour trail past us were giving it a go.

A stop along the way were the Devils Marbles.  Prior to leaving Sydney we were proposing to stop here over night but I had heard that the campground was small and all the grey nomads got there at 11am taking all the sites.  When we arrived at around 4 it was busier than the club on Pension Day.  There were caravans parked shoulder to shoulder like a parking lot.  I definitely know Jay would not like this camp.  And neither did we.

The Devils Marbles themselves are an amazing bit of geology.  As a result of some quirk of nature and thousands of years of erosion, you are left with these round boulders stacked on each other with some precariously balanced.  I went up to one and flicked it with my thumb but unfortunately it didn't roll.

Driving on it was getting dark so we were considering stopping at one of the free camp sites along the road.  But again it was consumed by caravans so we pushed on to Banka Banka.  Arriving late the owner was still very accommodating and found us a large site out the back and the good news is that I did not have to walk through 53 caravans just to get to the car.

Dinner and beer then bed ready for another long drive to Katherine.
