Day 35: Falls and Friendships

This morning we were woken by the haunting howls of a dingo with its distinctive call echoing over the valley.  A timely reminder as I have agreed to sleep outside on the last night so the kids can sleep on the bed with mum.

Today was a day of relaxation as we planned to spend the day swimming in the various water falls that make Litchfield National Park so popular.  First stop was Buley Rock Holes.  A fantastic series of cascading waterfalls with small deeply eroded pools in between, they made the ideal swimming spot and even better for bombing in.  If you are after a quiet spot to sit and relax and contemplate the power of nature slowly scouring depressions in the rock then this is not the place. If however you are after a great spot to swim and cool off, and for the kids to join the other numerous families enjoying life then this is the place.  And for once I was happy with the second option.

While not wanting to leave we packed to towels and moved on to Wangi Falls.  Prior to arriving in Litchfield Kathy was keen to make this our camp site (I think because it had a cafe and shop) so it was agreed to drive through and see if it was worth moving in a few days.  Driving through however we were greeted with the dreaded bollards again, with camp sites even closer together.  And the cafe was not that great either.  There was definite agreement that Florence Falls was a much better camp site.

We also knew we were in for a different experience based on the size of the car park.  Heading down to the falls with the procession of children with noodles and blow up crocodiles there are two things that stand out.  The first is the fantastic falls.  The second is the more structured setting with concrete steps and hand rails to enter the pool.  Despite this, it was still enjoyable to swim over to the falls and have the water thunder on to you from above and the deafening noise engulfing you.  A great relaxing way to spend the day.

Tonight is the last night camping with the full Huxley family. I still recall standing in line enrolling in classes at University over 25 years ago and striking up a conversation with am extremely attractive girl with firm and upright female features.  The conversation however was very boring so chatting to the girl next to her I soon realised we had a lot in common. I didn't realise it at the time but this chance encounter would result in me finding her a husband and starting a close friendship that has continued all through the years to today.

This friendship has extended to Karen entrusting me to look after her other half for the next three weeks as we fish with crocodiles, camp with dingoes, get drunk at Mt Isa and get lost somewhere between Birdsville and home. But until then,  there has been nothing better than sharing this experience with the best of friends. Thank you for your friendship Karen, Graeme, Hannah and Jarad.
